Somatic Fitness Program

The Somatic Fitness Program is a beginner level program designed to offer basic fundamental exercises to a workout to promote embodiment and mental well being.

These key exercises offer mindful movement practice designed to create mind muscle connection. Mind muscle connection is important in being embodied so that we are able to be in tune with what we need and to feel our emotions in a contained way.  This program supports mental wellbeing; management of anxiety; mindfulness; and stress reduction.  It also supports opportunity for strength and stability as well.

How does it work?

 

This program is a fitness program that works the body’s major muscle groups.  There are key exercises that can do this for embodiment as well as for an overall exercise program. 

 

We start by warming the body up to perform these exercises.  Weights or bands are used to support the strength training part of these exercises. Sometimes full body weight is used.  We work with the body with certain speeds to feel the body and also use certain exercises in between to work with the body to feel into it to build mind muscle connection.  A cool down allows the parasympathetic activation to calm and support rest and digestion.  The aim of the program is to create, with intention, mind muscle connection to support embodiment with the benefit of fitness training.

What do the sessions look like?​​​​​

During class, the instructor will demonstrate different lifts either with a band; weights; or body weight exercises.  This will be done in a specific way to focus on mind muscle connection.  The instructor will focus on different therapeutic techniques that support this connection. 

 

It is a contained way of learning different strength training techniques again with an intentional embodied approach to exercise.  The class is not necessarily to challenge muscle growth nor is it for weight loss.  The aim again is to build on relationship to self with building on what we call the felt sense. 

 

One will be able to walk away and to use this as a platform for challenging muscle growth and conditioning.  The class, however, is designed for relationship to self and embodiment.  A cool down will be done toward the end of class along with meditative, mindfulness exercises.

Can sessions be done online?

The sessions are currently held in person but online sessions may become available in the future.
